9 - 11 am: Review of diagnostic testing & management for common canine endocrine diseases (Dr. Fiona Tam) Endocrine diseases, such as hypothyroidism, hyperadrenocorticism and diabetes mellitus are common in our canine patients & often significantly affect their lives & their owners'. We will review the available testing, treatment & monitoring for these diseases & tips on how to interpret the results. 

11:15 am -12:15 pm: Diagnostic updates & management tools for chronic kidney disease (Dr. Fiona Tam) As one of the most common diseases in dogs and cats. chronic kidney disease often carries a poor long-term prognosis. This lecture will cover some newer diagnostic testing for this disease in dogs and cats and go over expectations and management to help improve survival time and quality of life for these patients.
 

12:45 pm - 1:45 pm: Surgical Treatment Of Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome (Dr. Colin Sereda) Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome is a term referring to the collection of abnormalities affecting brachycephalic breeds of dogs that cause difficulty with normal respiration.  Various surgical procedures are available for its treatment, and this lecture will cover the classic triad of therapies including widening of the nares, removal of everted laryngeal saccules, and shortening an elongated soft palate.  

2-3 pm: New Kids On The Block For The Treatment Of Canine Allergic Dermatitis (Dr. Vincent Defalque, by virtual presentation, on-site) Two new first-in-class medicine (oclacitinib and lokivetmab) give vets effective & safe options to customize treatment of canine allergic dermatoses. Though these treatments have similar indications, there are substantial differences in their mechanical action, administration, contraindications, safety profiles, and other details that require careful consideration when selecting them for different patients.
 
3-4 pm: A Practical Approach To Feline Pruritus (Dr. Vincent Defalque, by virtual presentation on-site) Chronic Pruritus is a common reason for consultation in feline dermatology. This lecture will present the different 'feline skin reaction patterns' in a didactic way as well as varous treatment options.

Speaker Biographies

Fiona Tam, DVM, MVetSc, DACVIM (Small Animal Internal Medicine)

Dr. Tam grew up in Toronto and obtained her veterinary degree from the Ontario Veterinary College. She completed a rotating internship in VEC in Toronto and stayed on as an emergency doctor, prior to moving to Saskatoon to complete her residency in Internal Medicine. After completing her residency and being admitted to the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM), she worked in a private specialty practice in the Pittsburgh area until 2022, after which she moved back to Canada with her cats to join the team at VCA Canada Guardian Veterinary Centre. Her areas of interest include endocrinology, respiratory and hepatic diseases. Outside of work, she enjoys hiking, knitting/crocheting and travelling. 

Colin Sereda, DVM, MSc, DACVS
Dr. Colin Sereda graduated from the Western College of Veterinary Medicine in 2001.  Following this, he completed a rotating small animal internship at the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine, and then a Master's degree and small animal surgical residency at the University of Florida's College of Veterinary Medicine.  Colin stayed on at the teaching hospital at UF for a year before moving to Edmonton in 2007.  Since then, Colin has served the referral veterinary community with surgical services and is currently working out of VCA Canada's Guardian Veterinary Centre.  
            
Vincent Defalque, DVM, DACVD
Dr. Defalque graduated from the Unversity of Liège in Belgium in 2001. He then completed a small animal internship at Vet'Agro Sup in France and a veterinary dermatology residency at Michigan State University. He became a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Dermatology (DACVD) in 2006. Vincent works at North West Veterinary Dermatology Services (NWVDS) in Victoria, British Columbia. He is a Past-President of the Canadian Academy of Veterinary Dermatology, & currently serves as the Canadian representative at the World Association for Veterinary Dermatology (WAVD). His special interests include parasites, ear diseases, and feline dermatology.
