06-02-2023 Dreamnight at the Zoo

Dear Veterinarians, RVTs and Support Staff,

DREAMNIGHT AT THE ZOO IS BACK!!!!

This is our official call out for volunteers.  We are so excited to have been invited back to the Edmonton Valley Zoo’s Dreamnight at the Zoo with the Dr. Milton Ness Memorial Teddy Bear Hospital!

EASAV’s Teddy Bear Hospital was the brainchild of Dr. Milton Ness, a long-time EASAV Member.  Milton was the past owner of the Ottewell and Capilano Animal Clinics and had dedicated 8 years of his life caring for the animals at the Edmonton Valley Zoo. During this time, he advocated relentlessly for the health and wellbeing of Lucy, our zoo’s beloved Asian elephant and he received the 2011 AbVMA Communication Award in recognition of his efforts to enhance the public image of the veterinary profession in our province.

Dr. Ness unexpectedly passed away in May 2014. Milton was a man who had dedicated his heart and soul into every aspect of his life: his family, health, work, animals, friends and children. His passion for animals and for educating all of those who were fortunate to cross his path was both inspiring and infectious and we host this Teddy Bear Hospital in honour of his name and legacy.

There will be a significant change to this year’s event!

  • To align with the zoo’s desire to open this year’s event up to more children and to make this event an experience-based one, our hospital will no longer be giving away free stuffed animals.
  • Instead, children will be invited to bring their own stuffed animals to participate in a hospital admission and treatment centre.
  • Here, they will have the option to receive an ID Collar and get directed to the various stations in our hospital.
  • We will continue to offer our interactive displays and our foreign body surgery experience where kids will be able to take home the "treats" they find that shouldn't have been eaten!
