Pet Body Donation Program: Veterinary Clinics
EASAV Pet Body Donation Program
Veterinary Clinic Information
Program Overview
The Edmonton Association of Small Animal Veterinarians (EASAV) Pet Body Donation Program provides an opportunity for eligible pets to contribute to veterinary education and continuing professional development following their passing.
Donated animals support hands-on educational opportunities that help veterinary professionals develop and refine skills, ultimately improving patient care for future generations of animals.
EASAV coordinates the program and covers the cost of communal cremation for accepted donations.
Eligibility Requirements
At this time, the program is accepting:
-
Dogs weighing 20 kg (44 lbs) or less
-
Cats
Program acceptance may vary based on educational needs and available capacity.
The Role of the Veterinary Clinic
Participating clinics play an important role in identifying potential donors and supporting pet owners through the donation process.
Clinic responsibilities include:
-
Discussing the program with interested pet owners
-
Determining whether the patient meets eligibility requirements
-
Contacting EASAV to coordinate acceptance and transfer arrangements (info@easav.ca)
-
Ensuring the cadaver bag is clearly labelled with:
-
Species
-
Sex
-
Participation in the program is entirely voluntary for both clinics and pet owners.
Some clinics may choose to use the EASAV consent form, while others may use their own documentation procedures.
Discussing Donation with Clients
Clinics may wish to introduce the program when:
- End-of-life discussions are taking place
- A client is exploring aftercare options
- A client has expressed concerns regarding aftercare costs
- A client has requested information about donation opportunities
Not every family will find donation appropriate, and all aftercare decisions should be respected.
Transportation and Coordination
Once an eligible donor animal has been euthanized, the clinic can contact EASAV to arrange transfer. (info@easav.ca)
The donor animal should be placed in a cadaver bag clearly labelled with:
- Species
- Sex
EASAV will coordinate pickup in a timely manner.
Aftercare
Following completion of the educational program:
-
Donor animals receive communal cremation
-
Cremation costs are covered by EASAV
-
Individual ashes are not returned to the owner
Owners should be informed of these conditions before donation.
Commitment to Respectful Use
All donor animals are treated with dignity, respect, and professionalism throughout the donation process.
Donations are used exclusively for educational purposes that support veterinary learning, training, and continuing professional development.
