Veterinarians and Technicians Welcome!

Morning - Tick Borne Illnesses

Dr Emily Jenkins Bio
Dr. Emily Jenkins (PhD, DVM, BScHon), is Professor and Graduate Chair, Department of Veterinary Microbiology, and head of the Zoonotic Parasite Research Unit at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon, Canada. Her research takes a One Health approach to diseases that transmit among animals and people via food, water, vectors, and the environment. She teaches parasitology to veterinary students from across western Canada and on zoonoses and One Health to graduate students across Canada.  She co-leads the University of Saskatchewan One Health Signature Area, serves as Canadian representative to the Terrestrial Working Group of the International Arctic Science Committee, and on the Canadian Veterinary Parasitology Consortium, which sets national best practices for diagnosis and control of parasites in companion animals.  She also co-coordinates tick surveillance in Saskatchewan.

Afternoon - Cytology, from Preparation to Evaluation
with Dr Kate Kewish Kate Kewish, BSc (Hon), MA, PhD (ABD), DVM, M Vet Sci, Dip. ACVP (Clinical Pathology).

Dr Kate Kewish Bio
Laughingly, Kate has more letters after her name than she has IN her name….some may accuse her of being a professional student. Her academic career started with an interest in physiological psychology, which took her to the PhD level. But the world of academia didn’t fulfill her desire to “do something”, so she switched to veterinary medicine. And because she can’t do anything “the easy way”, she went to 2 schools (WCVM & OVC) and had 2 children during vet school.

As an associate veterinarian, she worked in small animal practices in Ontario and Oklahoma. While in the US, the world of “Whoville” (i.e. the microscopic world of microbes and cells) and the search for in-depth medical answers called her into the realm of pathology…

After 2 more years of schooling, she started working for Central Vet Lab in Edmonton but only lasted for 9 months after the IDEXX takeover. She returned to general practice, working in the Edmonton area and opening Ellerslie Pet Hospital. The lure of pathology never diminished and morphed over time into a love for forensic pathology.

Now officially “Retired” to the beauty of the Crowsnest Pass in southern Alberta, Kate fills in at Edmonton Animal Care and Control Centre when the regular vets need a vacation and ghoulishly performs necropsies on cases requiring APA or Criminal Code investigations.

This wetlab is pending approval by The ABVMA and CVBC for 5 hours of CE Credits.
