EASAV President's Annual Message |
|
There have been a lot of changes to our profession and our association since Covid changed the world. Veterinarians and technologists are typically overworked, understaffed, and dealing with a confusing rotation of food, drugs and supplies that are not available/backordered. Much of our continuing education and even our 2021 AGM had to be done online. We still couldn’t have Dreamnight at the Zoo, and our first EASAV full weekend conference had to be postponed again, hopefully taking place May 2023!
There are some bright notes, though.
- As of January, 2021, technologists can become Associate EASAV members.
- Our 50th year Anniversary celebration at Fort Edmonton Park on September 6, 2021 was well attended and some of the original founding fathers of EASAV, Drs Mike Person and Richard Hertling, were able to make an appearance. It was wonderful to see everyone, even with masks!
- EASAV had a Wellness and Backcountry weekend Camping Retreat at the Y-Knott Ranch. We will be offering the Y-Knott Ranch excursion again for EASAV members, retired members and past volunteers from August 5-7. Please contact Smokey for more information.
- We had some wonderful short webinars, either split (Dueling Specialists Soren Boysen and Serge Chalhoub part 1 and 2, or “Oh, Behave” part 1 and 2 with Dr. Terry Curtis), or 2 hour CE presentations: Multi-modal Pain Management in Palliative Care with Dr. Robin Downing, Dr. Kate Baker Veterinary Cytology Hacks and Case Studies, and Forensic Files with Margaret Doyle.
- Online lectures with live wetlabs: Lower Your Exposure: Hands-free X-ray Techniques for the Awake and Sedated Patient, and All About the Abdomen (surgery). We have one more scheduled for November on Crucial Procedures with Dr. Marie Holowaychuk.
- In person Veterinary Anesthesia with Dr. Craig Mosley
- A Pancake Brunch at fantastic U of Alberta Botanic Gardens (May 29)
- We hired an assistant for Smokey, our hard-working EASAV Executive Assistant. Please join the board in welcoming our newest EASAV team member, Jackie Sehlin, and thanking Smokey for her continued dedication to keeping EASAV running smoothly.
- Upcoming Communication talk, the Language of Success, with the wonderful Dr. Jayne Takahashi.
Hopefully, as we look towards the “end” of this pandemic, some of you will consider joining the EASAV board. It is a great way to contribute to the local veterinary community, and we could use some more dedicated individuals to help with next year’s conference. Wishing you all good health and continued success!
Sincerely,
Dr. Cheryl Lewis
