Alberta Helping Animals Society (AHAS)

The Alberta Helping Animals Society (AHAS

AHAS provides mobile and in-clinic vet services for Edmonton’s low-income pet families with the help of their amazing volunteer team!

This announcement is meant to share information about just one of the great local animal charities EASAV is proud to support and promote, and to ensure that vet clinics are sharing the correct information about AHAS with their clients. Please keep reading.

  1. AHAS is primarily a MOBILE vet service, and depends on the availability of our volunteers to go out on house calls.
  2. AHAS clients MUST QUALIFY first. There are many low income/household parameters that our clients must meet before they qualify for free vet care.
  3. AHAS' main focus is on preventative medicine! AHAS provides vaccines, deworming, nutritional and behavioural coaching, spays, neuters and dentals for low-income pet families for FREE.
  4. AHAS goes out of their way to EDUCATE! We promote responsible pet ownership, advocate for indoor cat living, neutering of all pets and educate our clients on the increased risks of high population cat and/or dog households.
  5. AHAS works IN CONFIDENCE with marginalized, impoverished, senior and disabled clients who all benefit from the human animal bond that helps provide a better quality of life and purpose for these clients.
  6. AHAS does not provide emergency care. We cannot take on your clinic's clients who cannot afford care.
  7. AHAS has very LONG WAITLISTS (since we are 99% volunteer run). We are very transparent when scheduling our clients with how long their wait will be - currently appointment wait times are 3 + months!
We need more VOLUNTEERS ;)

If you’re interested in becoming part of our wonderful team of volunteers, we are always in need! We need drivers, RVTs and DVMs to go out and do house visits, in the AHAS van, any day of week, full days, part days, or even a couple of evening hours. Any little bit of time you can provide really helps!

We’re also looking for surgical nurses and DVMs to help spay and neuter on weekends and stat holidays, all year around! Perhaps you’re a clinic owner and interested in providing some pro bono consultations and/or surgeries at your clinic (like the Brintnell Veterinary Hospital and the Edmonton Community Vet clinic)? We would love to hear from you!

Please email Connie Varnhagen (subject line: RVT/DVM VOLUNTEER) at albertahelpinganimalssociety@gmail.com

We appreciate all of the help we can get as our need economy continues to grow. I personally believe that no pet family should be left behind, and in the many years of volunteering with AHAS, and seeing Connie and all of the amazing AHAS volunteers tackle these issues on the front lines, the hard work continues to lie on our veterinary industry.

Help us, help pet families in need by further uniting our vet industry here in Edmonton and advocating for the benefits of the human animal bond that keeps all of our vet clinics in business.
