  Message from The President

Navjot Gosal

Welcome everyone,

As we step into the next year with new ideas and ambitions, we thank our outgoing directors: President  Drs.  Guillermo Trimino and Treasurer: Daryl Meger. At the same time, we also welcome our new member,  Dr.  Chandan Maan along with our returning members who have stepped up to new roles to serve EASAV better. We are growing bigger and better with the mandate of collegeality and providing CE to the greater Edmonton area.  This year, our CE committee has added another milestone by lining up a “Hands on Lab” CE on orthopedic fracture repair.

We have also suffered great loss with passing of long standing members, Drs. Milton Ness and Jelto Schiebel.  Recently, EASAV organized the Milton Ness Memorial Teddy Bear Hospital at Dreamnight at the Zoo with great success. Thanks to Smokey’s enthusiasm and effort.

I hope to see you all at our annual BBQ this summer and open houses later this year.

Dr. Navjot Gosal, EASAV President

2014 Milton Ness Memorial Teddy Bear Hospital

EASAV's first Teddy Bear Hospital took place at the Edmonton Valley Zoo on June 6, 2014. Dreamnight at the zoo is an event which is hosted at zoos all over the world. Patients from the Stollery Children's Hospital and their families are invited to an exclusive evening filled with fun and animal encounters at the zoo.
The Teddy Bear hospital consisted of 6 tables where veterinarians/AHTs assisted children in triaging, treating and bandaging either their own or new stuffed animals, which had been donated by the staff at the Stony Plain Veterinary Clinic and the
Stollery Children's Hospital Foundation. The hospital also boasted a surgery room, where children were prepped to do foreign body "surgery" on a stuffed dog, which contained a stuffed liver, stomach, intestines and kidneys! Gifts for the kids were hidden in the abdomen of our stuffed surgery dog, which was created by a number of our volunteers. Each child surgeon was assisted by two AHTs!

The EASAV Executive Team would like to thank the following clinics, organizations and volunteers for their outstanding support.

Clinics:

Western Drug Distribution Centre, Valley Zoo Veterinary Hospital, Mill Creek Animal Hospital, Mission Ridge Animal Hospital, Capilano and Ottewell Animal Clinics, Leduc/Beaumont Animal Clinics, Millwoods East Veterinary Clinic, Terwillegar Veterinary Clinic, Hermitage Veterinary Hospital, Stony Plain Veterinary Clinic, Northgate Veterinary Hospital Ltd., Crestwood Veterinary Centre, Granada Veterinary Clinic, The Stollery Children's Hospital

Volunteers:

Doctors: Shannon Wawryk, Maria Sung, Alison Jackson, Katherine Takacs, Chandan Maan, Lisa Collis, Terri Pettifor, Jessica Wilson, Annabelle Sydie-Smith, Joel Torkelson, Kim Robinson, Jared Lawrence. Others: Smokey Walters,  Erika Mitchell, Caresse Brochu, Penny Radostits, Dustin Erickson, Heidi Vandenhouten, Shantel Woods, Erin Anderson.

For next year's teddy bear hospital, EASAV is asking member veterinary clinics to collect donations of all sizes of stuffed animals from their staff and/or clients. We will need very little stuffies (for use in our sx teddies as foreign body gifts) and small - large ones so that each child can receive one free stuffed animal.

MILTON NESS MEMORIAL FUND

EASAV has created a fund in the name of Dr. Milton Ness, for which all proceeds will be donated to the Edmonton Valley Zoo Development Society. All donations are eligible for a tax deductible receipt, which will be issued before December 31, 2014.

To donate to the fund, please click on the link or access it from the Discussion Forum on the EASAV website.
For $1000.00, EASAV will be able to make a legacy donation in Milton's name. Click on the link to learn more.
Currently, EASAV members and AHTs have donated $590.00 to this fund so we are over half way there!

Thank you to all who have already donated!
