Responsible Reporting: Recognizing

Distress in Your Patients & When to

 Report

Speakers: Margaret Doyle (DVM, BSc MVB MSc MRCVS, Forensic Veterinarian), CPO Sabrina Bergin & Olivia Rogiani

Abstract: Veterinarians are the natural advocates for animals and virtually every veterinary professional organization recognizes the need for better awareness of animal cruelty within our profession. We are uniquely positioned to bear witness to the effects of these crimes and to be the voices for the victims. This presentation will help raise awareness on a basic level of the role veterinarians have in recognition and reporting of animal crimes as well as our new legal obligation to society to fulfill that role.

Dr. Doyle is a forensic veterinarian as well as a private practitioner and a clinic owner. As professionals who dedicate our lives to animals & frequently go above & beyond to help any animal in need, the idea that anyone would intentionally or unintentionally harm an animal, can be quite an alien concept. This seminar will discuss guidelines for increased suspicion of abuse.

Our position unfortunately, frequently as business owners, and our professional and often personal commitments to our clients make us too often silent or blind to cases of neglect and abuse.  Dr. Doyle will address some of the common fears veterinarians face when considering reporting & discuss the ‘Link’ to encourage veterinarians to view their role in the health of people in the community as well as animals & to increase awareness of the potential wide-spread benefits to the recognition & reporting of animal crimes.

Fear of the unknown when it comes to the legal process involved in animal abuse cases is a common excuse for non-reporting. Animal Care & Control officers will discuss how to report suspected cases of abuse and neglect in the Edmonton area & use case examples to illustrate the steps involved after a case is reported and dispel myths of the investigative process.

Seminar Date: Monday, February 3, 2020
